7 in 7- 2nd Project- Plastic Bottle Hydroponics

Plastic is one of most common human-made materials today. We can find them everywhere. It is durable, cheap and comfortable to use, but at the same time, it has become a major source of pollution on earth. My 2nd design project for 7 in 7 is to make a connection between plastic bottle and nature and demonstrate how a plastic bottle can coexist with nature instead casing troubles.

It seems so hard for urban people take care their plants in a fast paste city. Our plants usually die or dehydrate because we are too busy to water them everyday. A solution may be planting them inside a water bottle. This is called hydroponics.

People started to use hydroponics as a way to produce vegetables since the very early time of human agriculture history. Today, hydroponics is not only a technique for agriculture, but also for gardening purposes. Instead of buying a expensive fancy glass vase holder, we can just find a way to reuse our plastic bottle to make a perfect holder to plant bulb flowers.

First, cut the plastic bottle horizontally near the upper part of the “body cylinder” where it meets the “shoulder” of the bottle.  This upper portion can now be flipped upside down and inserted back into the “body cylinder.” Now the bottle is ready to be used as a bulb holder. The last thing to do is to fill the bottom of the bottle with water.

The size of the top part of bottle with a hemisphere shape can hold most of common bulb flower’s bulb, such as hyacinthus, amaryllis, tulips, daffodils. The bulb holder can keep with bulb above the water and at the same time roots can go through the “mouth” hole to and reach to the water below.
